Peter is a Principal Scientist at the Nuclear Metrology group and leads the Radiochemistry research area at NPL. He is a Visiting Professor at the University of Surrey and Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
Peter has a PhD in radiochemistry from the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna and more than 25 years of professional experience in the nuclear industry, nuclear regulation, applied radiochemistry, radiometrics analysis, research and education. Since joining NPL in 2013, Peter has been responsible for management of flagship research projects, development of radioanalytical procedures and providing metrological and radiochemical support for environmental radiological monitoring, nuclear medicine and nuclear decommissioning.
Over the past decade, Peter has delivered invited lectures and laboratory practicals on radiochemistry and radioanalytical methods at a number of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) workshops and training courses on four continents. Peter has co-authored more than 80 peer-reviewed articles in radiochemistry and nuclear science, publishing in high-impact scientific journals, including Nature, Scientific Reports, Physical Review C & Frontiers in Medicine. He has co-supervised 7 PhD students to completion and lectured on taught modules on Radiochemistry, Nuclear Metrology, Nuclear Medicine and Nuclear Decommissioning for post-graduate taught programs at the Universities of Surrey and Birmingham. As a convenor of ISO/TC 147/SC 3/WG 16 Radioactivity Measurements: Alpha Spectrometry, Peter has been actively involved in the development of international quality standards for radiometric analysis. He also represents NPL at the CERN-MEDICIS Board and acts as an Academic Editor of Science and Technology of Nuclear Installations Journal.
