Graduates

Are you ready to make an impact?

Our graduate science and engineering programme offers a unique opportunity to join the dynamic and diverse team that makes the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) a world-class centre of excellence, delivering world-leading research and services.

Our two-year graduate programme is designed to provide valuable development opportunities and a rotational experience that supports graduate scientists and engineers to foster and develop their skills, empowering them to make a significant impact and maximise their career potential within NPL.

Whilst undertaking a graduate programme at NPL, your work will make real world impact on pressing national challenges such as:

  • Delivering measurement solutions to maximise innovation and prosperity in advanced manufacturing
  • Managing and mitigating risks to our national security and resilience infrastructure
  • Creating science-led measurement solutions for climate action and a more sustainable future
  • Driving innovation in healthcare, life sciences and the bio economy, improving quality of life.

About the programme

Blended learning

Over the two-year graduate programme, a comprehensive framework of development will give you an opportunity to build a wide portfolio of skills and experiences needed to excel in a research environment.

Alongside technical skills, the programme provides an ideal environment to build a range of core skills such as:

  • Communication, teamworking, flexibility and problem solving.
  • Resilience, confidence, self-reflection, continuous learning and giving and receiving feedback.
  • Time management, priority setting and commitment to projects and research.

Rotations

The programme will provide you with the chance to rotate across different groups within the laboratory and build an understanding of how they operate and interconnect with each other. You’ll receive support and learn from best-in-field colleagues and teams, who in turn will listen and value your thoughts and opinions.

Graduate Cohort

You’ll join a welcoming and diverse cohort of fellow graduate scientists and engineers, creating a strong network that extends across various departments within NPL. This unique community fosters collaboration and encourages the exchange of ideas, allowing you to learn from your peers while building lasting connections. With access to peer-to-peer support, you’ll have the resources and network needed to thrive as you embark on your professional journey.
