Enabling the transition to a sustainable energy system

The energy sector is in the midst of a transition in the face of growing international and legislative pressure to deliver on climate change mitigation goals. New regulations, technologies and practices are rapidly changing and innovation, digitalisation and capital cost reduction are becoming industrial priorities.

Traditional, centralised fossil fuel generators are being replaced by renewable and distributed energy sources. This is challenging system operators and energy system planners to come up with sophisticated ways to balance the grid for stable power supply, plan capacity expansion and reduce system costs.

For example, a transition to smarter electricity grids will facilitate the integration of increasing amounts of intermittent renewables, roof-top solar power and plug-in electric vehicles. Smarter billing technologies will speed up the adoption of decentralised energy, allowing end-users to also act as energy producers. At NPL, we provide the underpinning measurement capability to accelerate these innovations, and more.
