High voltage partial discharge (PD) measurements in multilayer printed circuit boards (PCBs)
The electrification of our energy and transport systems as we move towards net zero will require significantly increased use of power electronic systems. These need to be reliable, cost-effective and often lightweight to ensure widespread integration across these networks. High voltage electronics needs efficient, durable dielectrics to ensure this, and the use of printed circuit boards instead of ceramic substrates is already widespread in power electronics applications. Partial discharges at voltages lower than those required for full breakdown, can lead to deterioration in dielectric performance. To understand the partial discharge phenomena in multilayer PCBs, NPL has been measuring inception voltages across seven different multilayer laminates. This webinar will report the methodology used and results including the PD behaviour at lower pressures.
