Electronics reliability webinars

Providing technical and fundamental insight to in-field product reliability

Testing to improve in-life performance

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is internationally recognised for its practical and innovative work on electronic interconnection reliability, printed circuit board (PCB) failures and conformal coating research. We offer a range of webinars at no charge, giving you the opportunity to draw on years of practical experience without leaving your desk.

High voltage partial discharge (PD) measurements in multilayer printed circuit boards (PCBs)

The electrification of our energy and transport systems as we move towards net zero will require significantly increased use of power electronic systems. These need to be reliable, cost-effective and often lightweight to ensure widespread integration across these networks. High voltage electronics needs efficient, durable dielectrics to ensure this, and the use of printed circuit boards instead of ceramic substrates is already widespread in power electronics applications. Partial discharges at voltages lower than those required for full breakdown, can lead to deterioration in dielectric performance. To understand the partial discharge phenomena in multilayer PCBs, NPL has been measuring inception voltages across seven different multilayer laminates. This webinar will report the methodology used and results including the PD behaviour at lower pressures.

Tuesday 11 February 2025, 14:30 – 15:30 (UTC)

Speakers: Martin Wickham, Meenakshy Ramankutty and Dhaval Vankhade.

Fundamental webinars

Our series of 30 minute webinars are aimed at early career engineers, reviewing measurement techniques and how to apply them to better understand reliability performance and potential impact on product life cycle. These quick-fire sessions allow a high level of knowledge exchange where technical knowhow is not essential and are an excellent precursor to product trouble shooting and quality control.

Technical webinars

The majority of our technical webinars run for 60 minutes and provide in depth analysis and measurement of testing and performance of applications where we review techniques and better understand reliability performance. These sessions provide interpretation and are crucial in the support of product development and in-field performance issues.
