The great majority of activities today rely on electrical measurements of one form or another. Traceable electrical measurements are key across all areas of life, from the multi-billion pound electricity market to microwave communications and even DNA analysis.
In support of existing and emerging technology and industries, NPL develops and applies standards and methodologies to provided traceable electrical measurements from DC to 10 MHz and beyond. We are the UK’s centre for precise electrical measurement. Much of our measurement capability is either directly or indirectly traceable to our two primary standards, the Quantum Hall effect resistance and the Josephson volt.
We run one of the world’s most comprehensive capabilities for traceable measurement of basic electromagnetic parameters at RF and microwave frequencies. This is centred on the frequency range from 1 MHz to 110 GHz, but with many extensions at either end. The National Standards and measurement capability are developed specifically to support industry, engineering and science.
