Proficiency test exercises (PTEs) between hospital or research sites can be used for establishing equivalence, as part of a clinical trial for example, or as an auditing tool to demonstrate competence and traceability. A less formal variant of the PTE is an intercomparison exercise where, rather than using pass/fail criteria, sites are compared to demonstrate degrees of equivalence for a wider range of sample types and geometries. These results are generally published in scientific journals.
Standardised samples are prepared in a known geometry specifically related to the radionuclide of interest and are distributed to all participants. Results are collated and certificates of calibration may be issued after result submission to allow sites to adjust equipment accordingly. If you would like find out more information about the next Medical PTE please contact us.
Intercomparison exercises for specific medical radionuclides are operated by NPL every 3-5 years but are also available by request along with PTEs. Please contact us for more information.
