Soft magnetic materials are those materials that are easily magnetised and demagnetised. They typically have intrinsic coercivity less than 1000 A/m. They are used primarily to enhance and/or channel the flux produced by an electric current and have extensive industrial applications.
The normal magnetisation curve, hysteresis loop, remanence and coercivity of bars, rods, rings and strips of ferromagnetic material, having a regular cross-section, can be determined in accordance with IEC 60404 Part 4. For tests in the range of magnetic field strength 0.1 kA to 200 kA/m a test specimen of minimum length 250 mm is required. Ring specimens can be tested in the range 0.1 kA/m to 40 kA/m.
