Measurement of particle concentration output of stacks is key to the regulation of industrial emissions, e.g. Industrial Emissions Directive (IED - 2010/75/EU). NPL have developed a facility to create controlled concentrations of particles within a circulating air stream aimed at simulating the particulate emissions typical of stacks. This facility delivers the ideal route to test and calibrate particle emission monitoring equipment and provides the means for confirming proficiency of personnel in making these measurements.
The system can generate particle concentrations in the range of 1 - 40 mg/m3 and with a size range of 1 - 10 μm. The continuously circulating air passes through varying duct diameters ranging from 0.35 m up to 0.5 m at velocities in the range of 8 m/s - 17 m/s.
A series of ports allows insertion of instruments into the air stream at various locations around the system so that sampling and measurement of the particle concentration may be made. Linked to NPL’s traceable particle and mass measurement capabilities, conditions within the stack stimulator can be controlled with low uncertainties and calibrations generated with full traceability.
