NPL offers a range of validation and calibration services which support atmospheric science, emissions monitoring and measurements for security. Validation and calibration services include:

• Multi-parameter measurements of aerosol properties for climate models
• Analysis by GC-MS
• Validation facilities for remote sensing and open-path optical instruments. NPL is able to calibrate optical open-path instruments using specially developed facilities. Instruments that can be calibrated include: DOAS (Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy), FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared) and DIAL (Differential Absorption Lidar)
• Gas analyser calibrations
• Instrument type approval to the Environment Agency's MCERTS certification scheme
• Metals
• On site calibration of gas monitors

• Particle composition – organic and elemental carbon
• Particulate, metal, anion and PAH analysis
