Professor Washington Yotto Ochieng, EBS, FREng, serves as a member of NPL's Science and Technology Advisory Council (STAC), where he provides independent strategic advice and support. His expertise lies in evaluating the quality, international reputation, and industrial relevance of NPL's science and technology initiatives.
Additionally, Professor Ochieng holds various significant roles. He is the Head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and serves as the Chair Professor in Positioning and Navigation Systems. He also acts as the Interim Director of Imperial's Institute for Security Science and Technology (ISST). Furthermore, he serves on the Board of Trustees of the Science Museum Group and chairs the Advisory Board of the Science Museum in London. Moreover, he holds the position of Trustee and Vice President of the Royal Institute of Navigation and chairs the Africa Engineers Steering Committee of the Royal Academy of Engineering.
Professor Ochieng has achieved professional recognition as a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, and a Fellow of various UK Institutions including Civil Engineers, Highways and Transportation, Navigation, and Civil Engineering Surveyors.
His research work has garnered awards and focuses on various areas, including infrastructure resilience, user-centric mobility across different transportation modes, the design of space-based positioning and navigation systems for land, sea, and air applications, as well as air traffic management and intelligent transport systems.
In addition to his extensive roles, Professor Ochieng is a member of the Scientific Advisory Group for the FCDO (Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office) and the Scientific Advisory Council for the DfT (Department for Transport). Previously, he was a member of the x-HMG PNT (Positioning, Navigation, and Timing) Team at BEIS (Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy).
Recognizing his outstanding contributions, Professor Ochieng was honored with the Elder of the Order of the Burning Spear (EBS), one of Kenya's highest honors, bestowed upon him by Kenyan President Dr. William Ruto in December 2022, in appreciation of his distinguished contributions to Kenya and the world
