For people, place, prosperity and planet, we deliver impact with measurement science

Sotiris Ioannidis

Sotiris Ioannidis

Assistant scientist

Sotiris joined NPL’s Nuclear Metrology Group in September 2017 and begun work in gamma spectrometry working on Environmental PTE proficiency exercises and impurity checks of medical radionuclides.

Sotiris is participating in European Metrology projects MetroMMC in development of an advanced micro bolometry instrument, modelling the thermalisation of incoming particles in candidate absorbers and absorber geometry optimisation in GEANT4 and EMPIR Preparedness, on calibrating and characterisation of radiation measurement instruments used by members of the public to measure radiation dose, at NPL’s defined radiation field facilities.

Sotiris also lead the technical work to create a defined radiation field using collimated gamma ray sources, for the characterization of thin film material photon attenuation measurements and the interaction of Nano particles with radiation.

Interest Areas

  • Monte Carlo particle transport modelling using GEANT4.
  • Radiation matter interactions.
  • Micro Bolometer quantum detector development.
  • Citizen Science and the metrological reliability of big data collections for Preparedness applications.
