Giuseppe Schettino

Giuseppe Schettino

NPL Fellow

Giuseppe Schettino is a Fellow in the Radiotherapy and Radiation Dosimetry Group at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and acts as Head of the Radiation Biology programme.

He obtained his degree in Nuclear Physics from the University of Naples (Italy) and pursued further specialisation in Radiation Biology, completing a PhD at the Gray Cancer Institute/King’s College London (UK) and a postdoctoral fellowship at the Center for Radiological Research at Columbia University (NY, USA). In 2013, Giuseppe joined NPL following his tenure as a Lecturer at Queen’s University Belfast's Centre for Cancer Research and Cell Biology (CCRCB). From 2018 to 2023, he held a joint appointment as Professor of Medical Physics at the University of Surrey.

Giuseppe's contributions to science and leadership have earned him the titles of Fellow of the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM), Fellow of the Institute of Physics (IoP), and Honorary Member of the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR). He holds visiting professorships at the University of Surrey, University College London, and Queen's University Belfast. Giuseppe is also an Editorial Board Member of Cancer Nanotechnology and actively participates in various radiation research organisations.

Research Interests

Giuseppe's primary research interests include radiation biology, advanced radiotherapy, and dosimetry. His current research focuses on the biological effectiveness of proton and ion beams, high-Z nanoparticles, short-range radionuclides and FLASH exposures with the aim of defining new dosimetry quantities linked to biological response and biological optimisation of treatment plans. He coordinates the UK activities on standardisation of micro-dosimetry and dosimetry pre-clinical radiotherapy and radiobiology research.

Giuseppe has authored over 100 peer-reviewed papers and multiple book chapters and has supervised more than 20 PhD students to completion.
