For people, place, prosperity and planet, we deliver impact with measurement science

Michael Bunce

Michael Bunce

Senior Scientist

Michael graduated from the University of Surrey in 2009 with an MPhys in Physics with Nuclear Astrophysics which incorporated a year of research carried out at the Wright Nuclear Structure Laboratory at Yale University. Following this Michael pursued a Ph.D in experimental nuclear physics with a focus on high precision gamma-ray measurements; graduating from the University of Surrey in 2013.

He then joined a large defence contractor and worked on the measurement of neutron induced reaction cross sections utilising a high intensity neutron source.

In 2017 Michael joined NPL’s Nuclear Metrology Group as a senior research scientist and began work in the area of neutron metrology. Initial work included development of a plan to replace the Van de Graaff accelerator and irradiations using monoenergetic neutron fields.

Areas Interests

Michael’s current research interests involve:

  • Extending and improving the monoenergetic neutron fields that are on offer at NPL
  • Measurement of neutron induced reaction cross sections
  • Neutron spectrometry and detection
