For people, place, prosperity and planet, we deliver impact with measurement science

David Cant

David Cant

Senior scientist

David Cant received his PhD from the NoWNano DTC at the University of Manchester in 2013 for his work on surface analysis of lead sulfide nanoparticle films. He joined NPL in 2015 as a Higher Scientist, where his work has focussed on the use and development of X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) measurements, particularly for the analysis of nanoparticles and nanostructures. David has worked on several projects around the development of methodologies for the measurement of coating thickness and composition of nanostructured materials using photoemission spectroscopies, and has an active interest in the development of next-generation photoemission spectroscopy techniques such as Higher-Energy X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (HAXPES) and Cryo-XPS for the analysis of soft matter samples.

David is an active member ISO TC/201 on surface chemical analysis, in which he is an expert on SC 7 – Electron Spectroscopies.

Current interests

  • Surface chemistry of nanoparticles
  • Characterisation of nanoparticle coating/shell thickness using XPS
  • HAXPES metrology
  • Cryo-XPS for soft-matter nanomaterials
