Biography
Chris Hoole completed his integrated masters degree in physics at the University of Leeds in summer 2020. In his Masters research project Chris worked on assembling superlattices of quantum rod nanoparticles.
Chris is currently working on a joint PhD project with NPL and the University of Manchester. The focus of his PhD is on imaging and quantifying thermal properties of 2D materials. When in Manchester Chris is based at the UK National Graphene Institute, where he works on the fabrication of 2D material devices. He then brings these devices to NPL to characterise and test.
Research Interests
The main materials Chris works on are graphene, hexagonal boron nitride and transition metal dichalcogenides. He has a strong interest in the fabrication methods for 2D material devices, as well as material characterisation techniques such as Raman spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy.
Chris’ work also relies on the use of thermal probe imaging techniques such as scanning thermal microscopy (SThM) and Scanning Thermal Gate Microscopy. These are scanning probe techniques that allow thermal properties in nanomaterials to be visualised. Through these interests, Chris hopes to develop new methods for quantifying thermal properties in 2D materials.
