Head of Department for Time and Frequency

Tamaryn Shean joined NPL in 2011, and after successfully leading teams within Advanced Engineered Materials, Continuous Improvement and the Project Management Office, in 2022 she was appointed as Head of Department for Time and Frequency. She is responsible for the delivery of all the projects and programmes within Time and Frequency, including the successful delivery of the National Timing Centre programme for NPL.

Biography

She completed her PhD, in partnership with AWE, in Mechanical Engineering from Cambridge University in 2012. She has an MBA from Henley Business School (2019) and previously completed her M.Eng. at Cambridge University in Engineering (2008). Tamaryn has worked for AWE, Xtrac and Qiantiq previously in technical roles. During her PhD and M.Eng she co-authored a number of papers in Bioengineering, including 2 in Nature.

Tamaryn started her career at NPL as a Higher scientist looking at the benefit standardization of nanoindentation for characterisation of soft materials could have. After successfully project managing several projects alongside her technical role, she moved into project management where she managed a portfolio of European projects of €11 million before becoming the Group Leader for Composites.  She worked with the team to increase commercial growth by 21% by developing bold relationships and driving a strategy infrastructure investment into £4.0m for a new Mechanical Test Facility. Alongside this she drove project management improvements into new processes, systems and tools for NPL. In 2017 she was appointed as Head of Continuous Improvement and Project Management Offices, working closely with the Directors to deliver a new Target Operating Model for NPL and was responsible for more than 500 Science/Engineering projects.
