Mamatha Tomson is a Higher Scientist in the Air Quality and Aerosol Metrology Group (AQAM) at NPL. She has expertise in air quality monitoring projects and in assessing interventions to reduce air pollution exposure. She is nearing the completion of her dual PhD, funded by UGPN (University Global Partnership Network), in the Global Centre for Clean Air Research (GCARE) at the University of Surrey and the University of Wollongong, Australia. Her PhD research focuses on assessing the air pollution reduction potential of various green infrastructure options in urban environments.
She is experienced in conducting air quality monitoring campaigns, handling research-grade instruments, and analysing air quality data. During her PhD, she successfully managed air pollution monitoring campaigns to investigate the air quality and exposure variability in different microenvironments in London, under the INHALE (Health assessment across biological length scales for personal pollution exposure and its mitigation) project funded by EPSRC. She also worked with Liverpool City Council, Sydney, on air pollution exposure reduction using green barriers at a busy road traffic intersection.
At NPL, she contributes towards the delivery of Measurement Services jobs, including the calibration of CPCs, FCEs, and DMAs. She also assists with the advancements in the CPC calibration facility and works towards UKAS accreditation for FCE and DMA calibration.
Mamatha Tomson is an Associate Member of the Institution of Environmental Sciences (IES) and the Institute of Air Quality Management (IAQM).
