Krzysztof Ciupek is a Higher Scientist in NPL’s Air Quality and Aerosol Metrology Group and is leading the technical delivery of the UK Black Carbon Network. His work focuses on the physical properties of the aerosols and involves setting up a new calibration service to generate contrasting soot-like particles (uncoated and coated particles with an organic layer). He is currently involved in EMPIR AeroTox project where reference synthetic aerosols are combined with e.g. high-resolution optical imaging of exposed cells to study the cytotoxic effect of airborne particulate matter in vitro.
In March 2021 Krzysztof became a member of CEN/TC/264 Working Group 35: “Ambient Air – EC/OC” and is now actively involved in standardisation of black carbon and elemental carbon measurements.
Krzysztof is a postgraduate student at Imperial College London working on “Improving the accuracy of black carbon measurements for air quality and climate change”.
