Joy Schmeer is a Higher Scientist in the Air Quality and Aerosol Metrology Group (AQAM) at NPL. Joining in 2024, she is involved in managing the air quality monitoring networks across the UK (including the Automatic Urban and Rural Network, Heavy Metals Network, Black Carbon Network and the Particle Number and Speciation Networks) in addition to developing the Ozone measurement service.
Joy has recently completed a PhD in Aerodynamics and Environmental Flow at the University of Surrey, investigating experimental methods of modelling pollutant dispersion in urban environments using the national EnFlo wind tunnel facility.
As part of her first-class honours BEng degree in Mechanical Engineering, also at the University of Surrey, she published in the Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics following a final year project exploring groups of cyclists’ exposure to road vehicle emissions. Joy also gained international research experience during her industrial placement year at the Ecole Centrale de Lyon in France.
Joy’s accomplishments have been recognised with awards such as first place in the Wind Engineering Society’s Young Researcher Prize and the Judge’s Choice Award in the Three Minute Thesis competition within the University of Surrey. Joy Schmeer is also an associate member of the institute of mechanical engineers, the IMechE.
