Jordan Tompkins is a Senior Scientist in the Air Quality and Aerosol Metrology (AQAM) Group at NPL. He has spent 15 years working in the areas of ambient and industrial air quality at NPL and 2 years before that in the petrochemical industry. Jordan has practical laboratory and field experience in ambient, biomedical and industrial studies.
Jordan has an MSci in Chemistry and Molecular Physics from Nottingham University and is a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry. At NPL he is the Technical Lead on the Environment Agency air quality network for particle counting and sizing and the measurement service provider for the area of Condensation Particle Counter, Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer and Faraday Cup Electrometer calibrations. Jordan is also a member of three working groups ISO TC24 SC4 WG9 (Optical Particle Measurments), ISO TC24 SC4 WG12 (Condensation Particle Counter and other ultra fine measurement techniques) and CEN TC 264 WG32 (Air Quality – Particle Number Concentration).
Current interests
Jordan is currently developing traceability in the Differential Mobility Analyser measurement service at NPL and is looking to work more closely with industry for calibrations in the high particle number concentration area. He designed and carried out the experimental work for multiple industrial projects. Having had success in the dental aerosol area, he is leading and developing NPL’s biological aerosols work. He has a keen interest in Optical Particle Counters and is looking to develop this area for both bioaerosol and industrial emission sectors.
