Ileana obtained her Nuclear Physics Engineering degree in 1987 from the Faculty of Nuclear Sciences and Physical Engineering (FNSPE) of the Czech Technical University in Prague, with emphasis on dosimetry and applications of ionising radiation. She has MSc degree in Medical Physics from the Higher Institute of Advanced Sciences and Technologies in Havana.
From 1992 to 2010 she worked as medical physicist in radiotherapy at different radiotherapy services in Cuba and Costa Rica. During that time she also took part in IAEA regional projects aiming to improve radiotherapy QA in countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.
She joined NPL in 2011 and works for the Medical Radiation Physics Group. Her main responsibilities are in relation to the Clinical linac beam data acquisition service. Through that, she has the opportunity to meet with clinical scientist working in the UK and to keep the touch with the clinical work (that she loves). She has a keen interest in dosimetry for small fields. Lately she enrolled on a part time PhD in collaboration with UCL Cancer Institute, which aims to improve dosimetry for pre-clinical beams.
Ileana is HCPC registered as clinical scientist since 2012 and is member of IPEM since 2015.
