Guilong worked at the Wuhan Institute of Physics, the Chinese Academy of Science, China, after graduating from university in 1965.
He joined NPL in 1997, where he has since been engaged in research in atomic physics and laser spectroscopy, in particular projects on trapped ion optical frequency standards and absolute optical frequency metrology.
In 2002 he retired from NPL, but he is still a fulltime scientist working in the above projects.
