Eleanor Merson is Group Leader of NPL's Manufacturing Metrology group, based out of Huddersfield. The mission of the group is to facilitate confidence in measurement data in manufacturing products and processes, allowing UK manufacturers to develop and produce world-leading, innovative products in an ever more competitive global economy.
The Manufacturing Metrology Group explores the ways in which UK manufacturers are measuring and collecting data, today and into the future, and aims to ensure they have the same trust in this data as they would if they were using well established technologies, such as CMM. The group has a strong background in dimensional metrology but has also successfully worked on several Internet of Things and Image Analysis projects. The group will continue to build on these areas moving forwards.
Prior to joining NPL, Eleanor worked in UK manufacturing companies for 15 years, primarily within new product development, research and testing. She spent nine years at Sandvik, where she worked extensively with external research, particularly through the HVMC Catapult centres. Eleanor spent a further four years working in the safety industry, which involved work on process as well as product development.
Eleanor has a Master’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering, and completed a PhD on crystallographic orientation in titanium alloy welds. She is a Chartered Engineer, and a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. She represents NPL on the MTA Technical Committee, is an adviser to the CDT in the Future Fluid Dynamics and is a member of the IOM3 committee for a local group.
