Asem is a Senior Scientist at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), working in the Quantum Computing Circuits Group. His research focuses on the development of microwave-to-optical transduction technologies using optomechanical coupling mechanisms. This work aims to facilitate coherent quantum state transfer between superconducting quantum circuits and optical networks, a key step toward scalable quantum computing and quantum communications. Additionally, Asem is involved in projects related to parametric coupling, quantum amplification, cryoCMOS devices, and cryogenic noise measurements to enhance the performance of quantum devices.
Background and experience
Prior to joining NPL, Asem spent over a decade in Japan, where he worked at Kyoto University and the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) on superconducting quantum devices and quantum computing with electrons on liquid helium. He has extensive experience in quantum hardware development, cryogenic measurements, and superconducting devices fabrication and testing. Asem’s academic journey includes a PhD in superconducting electronics from Kyoto University, with a strong emphasis on experimental quantum physics and optical signals characterization.
