For people, place, prosperity and planet, we deliver impact with measurement science

Caroline Pollard

Caroline Pollard

Higher Scientist

Caroline joined NPL in August 2022 as a Higher Scientist. She works on both MALDI and DESI MSI method development with a particular focus in high spatial resolution imaging. Before joining NPL, Caroline was a Teaching Fellow for the Analytical Toxicology MSc at King’s College London where she taught on a variety of topics including alternative biological matrices for drug testing and mass spectrometry. She holds a PhD in Analytical Toxicology, also from King’s College London, which focused on evaluating the usefulness of latent fingerprints for illicit drug detection. From this work, Caroline has 3 first author peer reviewed research articles. Due to her toxicology background she is also interested in understanding how mass spectrometry imaging can be applied in this field.

Caroline's interest in analytical science was sparked by undertaking a year in industry as part of her Biomedical Sciences BSc where she was an analyst at the Drug Control Centre (the UK’s Anti-Doping laboratory). Working in an ISO accredited laboratory gave Caroline a solid understanding of high-quality analytical science, and in particular mass spectrometry. She gathered further mass spectrometry experience from working at the Biological Mass Spectrometry Centre (UCL) where her research involved biomarker identification for inborn errors in metabolism. Caroline is a member at the Royal Society of Chemistry and is an appointed member of the Analytical Community Council.
