Bryan Roebuck

Emeritus NPL Senior Fellow

Bryan Roebuck is an Emeritus Senior Fellow in Materials Characterisation. Bryan Roebuck is an international authority on the metrology and properties of hardmetals/cemented carbides (tool materials) and has published around 400 papers and NPL reports throughout his career at NPL.

He is currently a mentor for the Hard Materials Sectoral Group of the European Powder Metallurgy Association (EPMA), from which he received a Distinguished Service Award in 2013. He received the Ivor Jenkins Award from the UK Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining in 2005 for contributions to the field of Particulate Engineering. Bryan represents the Hard Material community on the ISO standards committee for Powder Metallurgy (ISO TC119) and led the development of many widely used standards for the PM industry.

Current interests

Bryan's personal research interests span:

  • Innovative test method development, eg miniature thermomechanical tests
  • Mechanical and microstructural test methods for tool materials, especially hard composites of inorganic carbides/carbonitrides and metals
  • Microstructural metrology
  • High-rate, high-temperature, deformation tests
