Dr. Bin Yan currently works as a Higher Scientist in the National Centre of Excellence in Mass Spectrometry Imaging. His duties and interests at present mainly include: 1) methods development of surface ionization techniques, i.e. liquid extraction surface analysis (LESA), matrix-assisted laser desorption and ionization (MALDI) with tunable UV/IR wavelengths, desorption electrospray ionization (DESI), and so on based hybrid techniques; 2) surface protein analysis with LESA coupled with ion mobility separation enabled Q-TOF mass spectrometry (MS) or orbitrap MS; 3) as a coworker to create a “Google earth” of cancer tumors using mass spectrometry imaging method.
Before joining NPL in Sep. 2017, Bin Yan started his academic career in chemistry from China, Xiamen University, where he obtained his Bachelor and MSc degrees. After that, Bin Yan accepted his PhD training at Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands, funded by EU Maris Curie Fellowship. His PhD thesis was titled “Structural preferences and biomolecular interactions visualized by infrared spectroscopy/mass spectrometry”. From Sep. 2015, Dr. Bin Yan joined in Prof. Perdita Barran’s group as a postdoc research associate at the University of Manchester. His research interest there was to use Ion Mobility Mass Spectrometry coupled with photodissociation to study Biomolecular Structures and Interactions.
