Andrea Briones

Senior scientist

Andrea Briones joined NPL in 2017 to focus on developing and applying innovative methods and metrology to address the challenges of antimicrobial resistance and synthetic biology.

Andrea received a BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry, following which she worked at Procter & Gamble for a few years in flavour and fragrance development. Later, Andrea completed her MRes in molecular biology, studying novel gene-gene interactions in the jasmonate signalling network. In 2016, she obtained a PhD in Biochemistry from the Royal Holloway, University of London for research involving the design of Salmonella atypical fimbriae (Saf) pilus proteins, the establishment of affinity-enrichment systems to capture Saf pilus specific binding partners and the identification of these by mass spectrometry.

Areas of interest

  • Metrology of antimicrobial action, discovery and resistance
  • Synthetic biology metrology and standardisation
  • Quantitative intracellular and extracellular measurements and materials
