NPL principal scientist Valerie Livina has been successfully appointed as a science expert at the International Science Council after participating in an international competition earlier this year.

Valerie stood out among thousands of applicants around the world for her dedication and care to advancing the role of science in shaping international policy. Her winning proposal was “Sustainable freshwater for the Global South”, in which she addressed the framework, methodology, challenges, and societal impact.

image-(4)ns-(1).pngThe International Science Council has been increasingly called upon to ensure that accurate and credible science is at the core of decision-making when addressing global challenges, especially those of the United Nations. To achieve this, they have created a collective of science experts from across industries, regions and disciplines who can provide policymakers with timely, informed, and impactful advice.

The selected experts will provide ad-hoc science advice to the United Nations Secretariat and Member States, develop policy briefs, contribute to statements that amplify the voice of the global scientific community and speak at high-level debates and policy forums.

Valerie Livina, Principal Scientist, said: I am honoured to be selected to serve as a scientific advisor for the United Nations. With my research background in data science, geophysics, and systems thinking practice (for which I recently completed an NPL Apprenticeship with MSc from the University of Exeter), I hope to provide useful input for multidisciplinary analysis of geophysical hazards and climate challenges that the United Nations strive to address globally.”
