Metrology for medicines and healthcare manufacturing

The increased volume of data produced from the digitalisation of pharmaceutical manufacturing is making the interpretation and exploitation increasingly challenging. The drive towards digital health is increasing the complexity of the manufacturing of medical devices and the supporting technology. NPL aims to support the successful delivery of the UK’s Industrial Strategy Challenges by developing the metrology required for medicines and healthcare manufacturing. Our work covers four key areas:

1. we provide confidence in the manufacture, supply, analysis, and control of increasingly complex medicines ​
2. we develop state-of-the-art measurement methods to underpin the understanding and evaluation of pharmaceutical product selection, performance, and validation 
3. we design and standardise data infrastructure enabling pharmaceutical manufacturers to assure and maintain quality, whilst introducing new technologies to control and improve products and processes 
4. we deliver the measurement infrastructure to provide trust and confidence in the design and safety of new medical devices, with a focus on materials, surface tests and validation
