The National Measurement Laboratory (NML), hosted at LGC, delivers underpinning chemical and bio-measurement science (metrology) for the UK as part of the UK National Measurement System (NMS).

Our state-of-the-art capabilities, including over 20 different types of mass spectrometer and a world-leading DNA Measurement Laboratory, allow us to address current and emerging measurement challenges, from isotope ratios through to cell characterisation and everything in-between. Our main site is based in Teddington, with additional locations in Cambridge and Strathclyde.

NEL (Formerly the National Engineering Laboratory)

Under the UK’s National Measurement System, NEL is the Designated Institute within the UK responsible for providing the national standards for flow and density measurement. It provides calibration, testing and consultancy services to industry and academia ranging from routine flow meter calibrations, to supporting the R&D required to introduce new technologies such as multiphase flow metering or metrology for clean fuels such as hydrogen.

Flow system modelling using computational fluid dynamics is another major service, often in conjunction with practical model verification using the R&D capability of the flow measurement facilities. NEL is also active in the development and evaluation of AI tools to support real-world flow measurement applications.

Support from NPL through the Measurement for Recovery (M4R) programme will enable us to potentially help offset the increased use of plastics due to COVID-19. Without the measurement expertise from NPL any testing we would have undertaken would have been less sophisticated, with results less meaningful to customers. I am happy that the results can help us to open up new opportunities to offer sustainable alternatives to plastic pails
