International Year of Quantum

Quantum Metrology: From foundations to the future

A global celebration of metrology and standards in the International Year of Quantum

Quantum Metrology: From foundations to the future kicks-off the UK’s “quantum week” and is part of the United Nations designated International Year of Quantum Science and Technology 2025 (IYQ) - a global initiative led by UNESCO to mark 100 years since the foundations of quantum mechanics. As part of the UK’s official contribution, NPL is proud to host one of 11 global events alongside an international steering committee of National Metrology Institutes – Quantum (NMI-Q).

What to expect?

  • A packed programme of keynotes, expert panels and global perspectives
  • Opportunities to connect with senior leaders, decision-makers and innovators Exploration of real-world applications in health, navigation, computing and beyond
  • Celebratory moments recognising international progress and collaboration
  • A curated art gallery exploring the creative, historical and cultural dimensions of quantum science and technologies
  • An opportunity to reflect on the next decade of quantum development in a truly global context

The impact of Quantum Metrology: From foundations to the future will extend far beyond the day, with outcomes feeding into an international vision for quantum science, to be presented at the IYQ closing ceremony in 2026.

What is NMIQ?

The event is steered by and marks the formal launch of NMI-Q, a new international initiative led by National Metrology Institutes (NMIs) from the G7 and Australia. NMI-Q is designed to accelerate the development and adoption of quantum technologies by:

  • Conducting pre-standardisation research
  • Developing best measurement practices
  • Informing the global standardisation process

NMI-Q will act as a strategic conduit between NMIs, Standards Development Organisations (SDOs), industry, academia, and governments – ensuring that quantum technologies are underpinned by robust, globally harmonised measurement science.
