For people, place, prosperity and planet, we deliver impact with measurement science

Electronic and magnetic materials

Electric and hybrid propulsion

Building confidence in electric powertrain components

We have a mission to help industry develop and deliver continuous improvements in electric propulsion technology for automotive and aerospace sectors.

Targets for emissions and efficiency are driving a rapid evolution of electric propulsion technology. Performance improvements present new measurement challenges, such as verifying component function, ensuring reliability in harsh conditions and understanding how materials behave when pushed to the limits of performance.

Over the coming years, new materials will be introduced to improve power and energy density, and decrease weight and cost. NPL is working to prove these materials and understand their performance and degradation in extreme conditions.

We have particular knowledge and expertise in:

  • High density and high temperature power electronics
  • Interconnects and thermal materials for high-density power modules
  • Soft and hard magnetic materials for motors and generators
  • Materials for energy storage

Measurement Challenges in Electric and Hybrid Propulsion

In the fast changing environment that characterises the development of power electronics and drives innovation in electric vehicles or electric aircraft, robust measurement plays a vital role in the success of technology development. As the UK’s National Metrology Institute, our expertise in supporting industry in defining and updating standards both for measurements of specifications and for qualification of products is crucial.

NPL conducted a study to identify the critical measurement challenges affecting electrification of transport. You can read our report here:
