South of England

Our South of England centre, based at the University of Surrey,  is growing rapidly as we make the UK's measurement infrastructure and access to NPL's scientists, engineers and technicians available across the country. We are able to respond to local needs, as well as national and international challenges, and build relations with local companies.  

In the South of England we are actively involved in future communications technology and there are two joint laboratories, the n3m and hyper THz labs, and the new 5G lab, which is due to launch in 2019.

NPL is expanding its capability in 5G by partnering with the 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC) at the University of Surrey, the leading institution in the UK for 5G. We are developing a new NPL-Surrey joint laboratory at the 5GIC and at NPL Teddington which will be a world-leading centre of expertise in mm-wave metrology for 5G systems providing unique measurement capability in the UK and allowing industry to optimise their 5G designs and have a competitive advantage in the marketplace. 

We will be uniquely qualified to develop entirely new measurement science for industry, measurement metrics and test strategies. It will cover over-the-air (OTA), error-vector-magnitude (EVM), channel models and beamforming antenna array characterisation capabilities for standardisation. These are all crucial unaddressed areas in 5G development and will support the UK 5G industry.
