Dr Valerie Livina is a mathematician specialising in time series analysis. She develops and applies novel techniques for data analysis and modelling. Her interests include analysis of various geophysical datasets and instrumental sensor records in order to uncover new phenomena and better understand dynamical systems describing nature.
Valerie joined NPL as a SeniorScientist in 2012 and was promoted to Principal Research Scientist in 2020. She has more than 20 years of research and teaching experience in pure mathematics, statistical physics and time series analysis in Russia, Israel and UK. Since 2007, she has developed the so-called 'tipping point analysis' for early warning, detection and forecast of transitions and bifurcations in time series of dynamical systems. The methodology combines modified degenerate fingerprinting (monitoring autocorrelations for early warning signals) and potential analysis (detection and forecast of transitional dynamics using stochastic models). Tipping point analysis has been applied to a variety of dynamical systems, from paleoclimate to ecology and structure health monitoring.
Valerie has published more than 70 papers in international physical journals and Russian mathematical journals. She has reviewed 70+ research papers for 30+ international journals in physics and environmental sciences since 2005, including Nature. Since 2003, Valerie attended 130+ conferences and workshops (more than 20 as an invited speaker) and 100+ training and developmental courses. Valerie is a Chartered Mathematician and a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Application (CMath FIMA), and a member of the European Geosciences Union.
Valerie is a recipient of the 2024 award of the American Physical Society (APS) Outstanding Referee. The Outstanding Referees are to be congratulated and thanked for their service to the physics community.
