Jon Fletcher

Jon Fletcher

Senior scientist

Jon is a Senior Scientist in the Quantum Electrical metrology group. His research focusses on quantum electrical standards based on single electron transport, single electron quantum optics and cryogenic CMOS systems for quantum computing. He has extensive experience in sensitive electrical and magnetic measurements at deep cryogenic temperatures.

Biography

Jon was awarded an MSci in Physics from the University of Birmingham in 2001. He was awarded a PhD from the University of Bristol in 2005 for work on experimental probes of unconventional superconductivity and the electronic structure of strongly interacting electronic systems. This work involved many cryogenic and high field measurement systems and a variety of techniques including thermal and electrical transport, penetration depth measurements and torque magnetometry. After joining NPL in 2009 he moved from materials physics to work on engineered single-electron systems in semiconductors. Single electron devices are an elegant way to control electricity at its most granular level.

Projects

  • Studies of the underlying physics and the performance high-accuracy single electron pumps, which offer a path to primary tracability to the SI ampere.
  • Development of electron optics with high energy electrons, establishing the ejection characteristics of injected electrons and the interactions between ballistic single electrons.
  • Within the NPL quantum program, creating measurement systems for cryogenic electronic components. This research will support the creation of quantum computing platforms which require cryogenic control systems.
  • Jon is an enthusiastic communicator of science to the public. He was the technical lead on NPL’s Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition and a is regular presenter at open days, careers and outreach events.
