We are responsible for the metrological framework for global atmospheric reference networks and to improve the quality of UK atmospheric and air quality measurements. We develop capabilities and facilities to support the testing and validation of atmospheric monitoring technologies and methods.
Atmospheric monitoring activities, on both national and global scales, currently lack traceability and rarely have an assigned uncertainty. The appropriate metrological tools are required to show global comparability between different methods and that the data are fundamentally trustworthy. We work with the atmospheric monitoring community to provide metrological support in the characterisation of the uncertainty sources which are associated with determining atmospheric composition. These include the GCOS Reference Upper Air Network and DECC Deriving Emissions linked to Climate Change, the UK's GHG network.
