The communications industry continues to experience exponential growth, particularly in mobile communications, 5G, data transfer and the Internet of Things (IoT). This presents a challenge to the technical community who are aiming to maximise the utilisation of the electromagnetic spectrum. NPL has responded with a diverse range of sophisticated solutions, for example in relation to antenna design and optimisation.
The radio frequency (RF) band of the electromagnetic spectrum, which includes the microwave band, covers the frequency range from approximately 30kHz to 300GHz. This band is especially important to the global telecoms industry, and used extensively for mainstream wireless communications, including mobile phones, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and radar. The National Standards and measurement capability are maintained specifically to support industry, engineers and scientists.
